Review – A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous Retinal

geekandgorgeous-retinal-a-game-10-5

I started using Geek & Gorgeous A-Game 10 as a replacement in the evening skincare regimen for The Ordinary retinol, which for a long period was impossible to find online.

I chose Geek & Gorgeous A-Game for the star retinal ingredient.

What is retinal?

Retinal is a derivative of retinoic acid.

The retinal needs a single conversion step, while the retinol needs two conversion steps. Once converted, the retinal helps skin cells produce more collagen and other structural elements, increasing firmness, elasticity and reducing the appearance of aging skin.

It is proven to accelerate the regeneration of the upper layers of the skin, rejuvenate, smooth, and even out the skin.

In terms of efficiency, A-Game 10 with 0.1 % retinal is similar to a product that contains 1 % retinol but has lower irritation potential and faster results.

The skin makes this conversion, and although I was very pleased with The Ordinary retinol, my curiosity for the new formula from Geek & Gorgeous won.

The benefits of using the A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous Retinal

A-Game 10 Retinal Geek & Gorgeous promises the following:

  • to help with fine wrinkles and to prevent them;
  • to improve skin texture and pore appearance;
  • relief of hyperpigmented spots, melasma, and acne scars. See also the complete melasma regimen, depending on your available budget.
  • it has a light, silky texture;
  • it is suitable for all skin types, with a comfortable texture for combination or oily skin.

You can read more about the key ingredients of A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous below:

  • Tocopheryl Acetate – a form of vitamin E with an antioxidant role;
  • Retinal (0.1%) – a superstar rejuvenating ingredient, which is the direct precursor of retinoic acid (the active form that skin cells understand), and the efficiency/tolerance ratio is exceptional among typical retinoids;
  • Allantoin & Panthenol – a duo of classic ingredients, recognized for their skin-soothing and protective abilities;
  • Gum-1 Biosaccharides – a carbohydrate molecule with a calming and moisturizing effect on the skin, which contributes to the soft and silky texture of the product;

How to use A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous Retinal

I want to start with something that I think it’s important: my skin type.

I have combination skin, very acne-prone since puberty, reactive, but not sensitive. If you have sensitive skin I recommend you start with the A-Game 5 from Geek & Gorgeous and work your way up to A-Game 10 in time. Be gentle to your skin, especially if it’s sensitive.

Apply as much as a pea on double-cleansed and dry skin as part of the evening routine.

In the beginning, when I first started with A-Game 10, my evening routine was very simple: make-up removal, cleansing, dry the skin well, A-game 10 (which I leave on the skin for about 20 minutes) then I go to the moisturizing part of the regimen, aka CeraVe moisturizing cream. If you keep on reading you’ll see my full routine with A-Game 10. It took about 3 months to achieve skin tolerance for all the Geek & Gorgeous products that I know use.

For starters, I recommend applying A-Game 10 (or 5) once every two days, to increase skin tolerance; if you do not experience sensitivity, after two weeks you can switch to daily use if you want to, of course. The application in the area close to the eyes will be done with great care, you must make sure that the serum will not enter the eyes.

You do not need to apply it daily if you don’t want to, or if you do have other actives that you want to include in your pm skincare regimens. I apply it 4 times/week in the evening. The other evenings are for gentle exfoliation, and once every ten days I apply, within the pm routine, the salicylic acid mask from The Ordinary.

A-Game 10 has an intense yellow hue, a color due to the retinal content. The serum spreads and absorbs easily, does not stain.

Precautions

People with rosacea or sensitive skin can introduce A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous in their skincare regimen, but with caution. However, the risk of the skin reacting to retinal is lower than the classic retinol. To increase the retinal skin tolerance I advise you to follow the tips below:

  • either apply it at the end of the evening routine or mix with moisturizer;
  • in the first 2-3 weeks I recommend 2-3 applications, with caution, to be able to observe skin reactions;
  • it is possible because you have sensitive skin, to face purging (redness, acne breakouts, flaking, or excessive dryness of the skin)
  • do not use retinal with other products with low pH: AHA, BHA, ascorbic acid;
  • after a few months of use, you can try to apply it in more elaborate evening routines, before niacinamides, azelaic acid derivatives, or vitamin C derivatives for example.
  • Not to be used by pregnant or lactating women!

Use 30/50 sunscreen every morning in the right amount (1.25 ml for the face). Reapply the SPF in a few hours. Currently SPF 50 Altruist Face Fluid is my favorite sunscreen.

My skincare regimen with Geek & Gorgeous

I’ve started using Geek & Gorgeous products about 4 – 5 months ago, and I’ve introduced each one slow in my pm routine, being very careful at my skin reactions. Now my pm routine looks like this:

Geek & Gorgeous PM 1 routine

  1. Double cleansing (first with an oil cleanser, followed by CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser). I pat my skin gently until it’s completely dry.
  2. B-Bomb – the Geek & Gorgeous serum with niacinamide (review soon)
  3. aPad – the Geek & Gorgeous serum with an azelaic acid derivative (review soon)
  4. A-Game 10
  5. CeraVe moisturizer

Geek & Gorgeous PM 2 routine

  1. Double cleansing.
  2. Smooth out – the Geek & Gorgeous strongest anti-aging focused exfoliant with 12% AHA + soothing Nopal Cactus (review soon)
  3. HA 5 Light – Geek & Gorgeous hyaluronic acid
  4. CeraVe moisturizer

What I love about A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous

  • it is a very light serum, it is well absorbed into the skin and is gentle with it, it does not dry it excessively;
  • the skin looks more even, the spots seem to have faded (they have not disappeared, but their appearance has visibly improved after months of using the A-Game 10 ). I have a few small spots of melasma right next to my eyes. The fact that I was able to apply the A-Game 10 retinal so close to my eyes was a game-changer for the skin in this area.
  • smoother skin, without irritations and pimples;
  • slightly shrunken pores;
  • I love the packaging with the airless pump;
  • it is valid for 6 months from the opening;
  • Geek & Gorgeous products are vegan and not tested on animals.

I’ve been thinking and thinking for months since I’ve started using A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous, I’ve been very careful about any reaction, but I haven’t found anything against this product.

Where can you buy A-Game 10 Geek & Gorgeous?
